One morning Akbar went out for a walk with Birbal and Prince Salim. They came to the bank of a river. It was a hot day. They were tired of walking. They sat down to rest under a tree. Akbar said, “We shall bathe in the river. Birbal did not agree. Salim wanted to bathe in the river with Akbar. Akbar said to Birbal, “ We shall bathe in the river. Hold our clothes in your hand.” Akbar and Salim put off their clothes and gave them to Birbal. Then they bathed in the river. After bathing, Akbar said to Salim, “Birbal is standing in the sun holding our clothes. He is undoubtedly a fool. He looks like a washerman’s donkey. I shall joke with him.” Akbar said to Birbal, “ You’re carrying the load of a donkey.” In reply, Birbal said, “No, sir, I am carrying the load of two donkeys.” Akbar and Salim roared with laughter.
