Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar

           Vidyasagar, one of the greatest sons of modern India, was born on 26th September in 1820 at Birsingha in Midnapur. His father was Thakurdas Bondyapadhya and Bhagabati Devi was his mother. He received his early education in the village pathsala. Thereafter, he came to Kolkata with his father and was admitted to Sanskrit College in Kolkata. He was a brilliant student. He was a great Sanskrit scholar. So he was called Vidyasagar, an ocean of learning. He started his career as a teacher of  Fort William College. Later he became its principal. He was an inspector of schools for some time. He was an educationist. He was the father of Bengali prose. He wrote many books like Barna Parichya, Sitar Banabas, Sakuntala, etc.

             Vidyasagar was a great social reformer. He introduced widow-remarriage and stopped child-marriage. He set up many schools for girls. He was a kind hearted man. He had a great sympathy for the poor. He always loved and helped them. He was known as Dayar Sagar, an ocean of kindness. He had a great love and respect for his mother. The great man, with uncommon personality passed away on 29th July 1891.
