George Washington – a truthful boy

Once there was a little boy. His name was George Washington. One day his father gave him a small axe. He was very pleased with it. The axe was bright and sharp. It had a wooden handle.

Once he went to his father’s garden to try the axe upon every tree there. At last he came to a young apple tree. He started trying the axe on it. He cut all its branches. The tree fell on the ground.

In the evening George’s father visited the garden. To his utter surprise he found the apple tree lying on the ground. He became very angry and shouted at George, “Who has cut down the apple tree?”

George was a truthful boy. He did not tell a lie. He said that he had cut the tree. His father was pleased. He took up in his arms and patted him. He said, “I am proud of you, my son.” “I am sorry for the apple tree but you have told the truth which has gladdened me.”

Moral: Truthfulness is a great virtue.
