Once a young man got down from a train at Burdwan station. He was shouting for a coolie. He did not want to carry his suitcase. He saw a man in simple dress standing nearby. He asked the man taking him for a coolie, “How much will you take to carry this bag?” The man in simple dress said, “Whatever you please, Sir?” The young man handed over the suitcase to him and went on. The poor man followed him. When they reached the house, the carrier handed over the suitcase to its owner. The young man wanted to pay him something. But the poor man refused to take anything and left the place in a hurry. The young man soon found out who the carrier of his suitcase was. He was Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar. He felt ashamed of his conduct. He went to the great man and begged his pardon. Vidyasagar said, “My dear young man, don’t forget that self-help is the best help?” The young man learnt a good lesson of self-help and left the place in haste.
