None can please all

One day a farmer and his son were walking to market to sell their ass. Some people remarked, “What fools they are! They are walking in the sun and their ass is carrying nothing.” The old man heard this. He placed his son on the ass’s back and he was walking behind. After some time they found a group of old men. One of them said, “Look, the young man is riding on the ass, while his father is walking on foot.” Hearing this, the boy got down and his father got on to his place. As soon as they went far, they suddenly saw a few old women. One of them cried, “How cruel the old man is!” He is riding comfortably and his son is walking beside.” Hearing this, the old man placed his son behind him. Thus, both father and son were riding on the back of the ass. Soon they came across some farmers. One of them cried out, “Why are you so cruel? Do you want to kill the poor ass? Come down. Carry it yourselves otherwise it will be killed.” His words wounded their feelings. The old man tied the legs of the ass to a pole. He and his son carried the load of the ass on their shoulders and walked on. When they came to a bridge across a river, the ass was frightened and tore its ropes. It fell into the river and drowned.
