Newton’s patience and his pet dog

Newton was a world-famous scientist. He had a little pet dog named Diamond. He loved the dog very much.
One day Newton went out of the room for an urgent piece of business. He was then about fifty. He had worked on the theory of light for long twenty years. There on the table lay a heap of papers – the fruits of his twenty years’ labour. Near it lay Diamond in deep sleep.
Suddenly the dog awoke, jumped upon the table and overturned the lighted candle. The papers on the table caught fire and burnt to ashes.
When Newton returned and opened the door of the room, he found that his twenty years’ labour had been reduced to ashes. There stood little Diamond, ‘the author of the mischief.’ Any other man would have killed the dog at once. But Newton patted the dog on the head and said, “Diamond, you do not know what mischief you have done. You have ruined the fruits of my twenty years’ labour.”
Moral: Kindness proves one’s greatness.
