Lord Buddha and a Sorrowful Mother
words:225
One day Lord Buddha was seated among his disciples. At that time a woman came to him. Her eyes were full of tears. She fell at his feet and said, “I lost my only son. I have no one else in the world. How can I live without him? Oh Lord, Give life to my dead son. I am the most unhappy woman on earth. Buddha felt pity for the woman. He tried to console her in every possible way. But she did not listen to his words. She said, “You can make an impossible thing possible. Give some medicine to revive my dead son.”
At last, the holy man said, “Bring me a handful of mustard seed(s) from a house where nobody had ever died.” With a ray of hope the weeping mother went from door to door in search of some seed from a house where no one had ever died. But she failed to get such a house. Then she came back to Buddha and said, “Oh lord, I did not find a house where death had never entered.” Then Lord Buddha said to her, “Death is common to all. One born on earth is sure to die one day. None can avoid it. Don’t lament for your dead child.
Moral: Death is inevitable to all.
