A Woodcutter and the River-god

A wood-cutter lived in a place. Once he was cutting wood beside a river. Suddenly his ax(axe) fell into the river. The wood-cutter started crying. The river god took pity on him. He appeared before him with a gold ax(axe). He said, “ Is it yours?” The wood-cutter replied, “It is not mine.” Then he came up with a silver axe and said, “Is it yours?” The woodcutter replied, “No, it is not mine.” At last, the river god brought an iron ax (axe) and said, “Is it yours?” The wood-cutter found his own axe and cried out in joy, “Yes, it is mine.”

The river god was pleased with (at) his honesty and rewarded him with all the three axes.

Moral: Honesty deserves a reward.
