A strange way of punishment to cure laziness
words:150
Everyone’s duty is to work. A lazy man wastes his time. His life is useless to himself and to others. A lazy man is ready to steal or beg for his living.
At one time there was a custom in Holland to cure a lazy man. When a strong and stout person was found begging, he was seized and put into a pit. Water was poured into the pit through a pipe. A pump was set at the bottom of the pit to pump out the water. If he stopped pumping, he was surely drowned. It was (a) great fun for the passers-by who saw how a lazy vagabond was being forced to work. A few hours of this kind of punishment was enough to cure such a lazy fellow.
Moral: Work is worship.
