A Cobbler and his neighbour
or
A Cobbler and a Banker
words:230
Once upon a time there was a cobbler. He lived a happy life. He passed his days by working and singing from morning till night. His rich neighbour was a banker. One day the banker said to him, “How much money do you earn per year?” In reply the cobbler said laughingly, “How much do I earn a year? I never counted in that way. I live from hand to mouth but I am happy.” The rich neighbour said, “I have resolved to make you free from the fear of poverty.” Take this bag of money, preserve it and use it in time of need. The cobbler never saw so much money at a time in life before. He hurried home with the money and buried it underground. But, Alas! He buried the happiness too along with the money as at night he could not have a sound sleep. He had to remain alert the whole night. He thought of the hidden money all the time. Thus he lost his sleep and happiness. Once he went to the banker and said, “Take your money back. This has snatched away my sleep and happiness.” At last the cobbler returned the money to the banker. Again he got back his mental peace, happiness and sound sleep.
Moral: True happiness lies in contentment.
