A Caliph and his faithful slave
words:186
Long ago, there was a great Caliph in Bagdad. He had a slave who was very ugly-looking, black and short. But the Caliph loved him and chose him as his constant companion.
Once his courtiers said to the Caliph, “Oh Lord, Why do love this ugly slave more than all others?”
The Caliph said in reply, “Listen to the story of why I love him so much. Once while I was going along a narrow path, my camel slipped and fell. An ivory casket containing my most precious pearls fell from the camel’s back. The lid of the casket broke and the pearls were rolling on the muddy path. I said to my slaves, ‘Go and take the pearls. Everyone will get what he picks.’ All the slaves went to collect the pearls except this ugly one. I said to him, “Why do not you go and join your friends?” The slave replied, “My lord, you are the most precious pearl to me. I am staying here to guard you.”
