Satyajit Ray, was one of the greatest sons of Bengal, was born on 2nd May in 1921 at Garpar Road in North Calcutta. His father’s name was Sukumar Ray. Suparva Devi was his mother. His grandfather’s name was Upendrakishore Ray Chowdhury. His pet name was ‘Manik.’ He became fatherless in his childhood. In 1930 he was admitted to VI in Ballygunge Govt. High School. After passing the Matriculation Examination he was admitted to Presidency College. He obtained his B.A. degree in 1940. Then he studied art at Santiniketan.
Satyaji Ray was a genius. He became famous for his contribution to the world of film Industries. His first production ‘Pather Panchali’ created a stir among the people of the world. From then on, he started his career as a director. He directed many films like Apur Sangsar, Aparajita, Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen, Hirak Rajar Deshe, Kapurush, Mahapurush, Nayaka, Sonarkella, Ghore Baire, Tinkanya, Jalsaghar, Paraspathar, Mahanagar, Ganashatru, etc. Honours were showered upon him from all corners of the globe. The Govt. of India offered him ‘Bharat Ratna’ in 1922. He was awarded ‘Oscar’, the best film award, in 1992.
The great man suddenly passed away on 23rd April, 1992. The world grieved for the sudden death. He is no longer in the land of living but he will remain ever alive in the hearts of the people of the world.
